Artist Statement
My artwork has been mainly figurative. Fluid and gestural movements have been a theme connecting my work. In exploring my own connections and personal feelings, I aim to portray human emotion. Realism or the interpretative abstraction of the human form is equally important. To me, abstraction means experimentation. I often practice new techniques and turn every experiment into a broadening learning experience. I accredit success in art making to never sticking to one set formula and allowing myself to constantly change, evolve, and develop as a maker. A lot of my work is created based on one subject: me.
Self-portraits, although personal, convey a universal wanting of understanding through a persons individual lens. Exploring many areas of knowledge enhances my abilities and makes me a more successful and relatable storyteller. I want to use whatever I can to grab the viewer’s attention so that they can imagine what I am thinking. By doing this, I hope the viewer may feel just as I do and perhaps walk away with a little understanding.
